Where do I start about these magnificent trees? We have ten Sequoia Trees scattered around our garden and everyday as you walk past them you will feel like the smallest person on the planet.

As they tower above you, their bark looks spongy, soft and full of life. Full of cracks, depth, history and personality, You feel that at any moment they may come to life, bark resembling an old and wise character.

Giant Redwood Sequoia

One of our favourite parts of the garden, where most of our Redwoods stand (both Giant and Coast Redwoods), makes you feel peaceful, calm, and serene. This particular area looks like a Theatre set from a movie and it is remarkable that they have stood for so many years. If they could talk, I would love to know what they would say!

It is said that Sequoias originated from California and that they were the chosen trees to be planted in estate gardens to show how grand they were. From my experience, nobody has ever said they look disappointing. You can hear people’s gasps of astonishment as they stretch their neck and try to see up to the canopy.

The first sequoia was seen by Augustus T. Dowd, and was named, ‘The Discovery Tree’. After withstanding storms and forest fires for many centuries, in 1852 the tree encountered a western man. A year later the tree was felled...

It took five men and 22 days and after counting the tree rings it appeared that this tree was 1300 years old. The remaining stump was used as a dance floor.

Discovery Tree!

Skyscrapers, Boxing or Punch Trees!

Thick bark, small cones, large spindly branches, they grow until they hit full sun. Fire resistant, they sip on fog, they leave your hand print in their bark, their roots intertwine with other trees and they are absolutely enormous! Walking beside them, sitting under them, forest bathing beneath the canopy in our Hikki Hot Tub, pressing your hand onto their incredible bark, it’s no wonder they symbolize wellness, safety, longevity, wisdom and communication.

Tender Loving Care!

When we arrived at Mauldslie, a few of our Redwood trees were hidden amongst the undergrowth, surrounded by years of fallen dead branches, nettles, pine needles and they were covered in ivy. Their branches were long and spiky. It was to our delight that after a bit of TLC, a tree surgeon, and some manual labour, they now really do stand proud in our grounds. They are all listed too, so of course, they will be here way after us. We soon hope to light up our trees to show them off even more!

We follow Redwood Trees on Instagram but we are particularly keen to find more around the UK too, especially in Scotland! Most recently, we have noticed the Redwood’s featured on ‘The Great British Bake Off’ and we recently visited ‘Benmore Gardens’ in Argyll & Bute, where you are met at the entrance with the ‘Redwood Avenue’ of 54 trees, truly amazing!

Please let us know if you see any on your travels and indeed tag/post/follow/share with us on our Instagram / Facebook Pages @punchtreecabins
