History of Mauldslie
We are situated amongst 5.5 acres of historical terraced green lawns, Giant Redwood Sequoias, Hemlock Firs and English Yew Trees.
We are part of history, as in 1792, Mauldslie Castle was built on our land by the revered Robert Adam, but sadly it was demolished in 1935 due to taxes. The elegant gatehouse does, however, survive as do the surrounding Stable blocks.
Our grounds are seeped with history and magical stories from the past. Our terraced gardens encapsulate our stunning grounds and was once where the people played bowls and croquet, fondly known as ‘the Pleasure Gardens’.
There are a few hidden seating areas you can find in the grounds too and the original cobbles to the kitchen, still stand.
In 1914, King George V and Queen Mary came to visit, enjoying, it is said, an enormous picnic of pie and peas! Just days after their visit, Britain was plunged into the First World War.
Sir Winston Churchill was also a regular visitor. He came to visit Clementine Hosier (who he then married) whose family owned the Castle.
As you walk through the gardens, you will spot remnants of the castle hidden in the undergrowth. As you enter into Mauldslie you will drive over the stunning Mauldslie Bridge and across from our property the original stable blocks still stand now as residential homes.
“7th wedding anniversary and our first childfree night since our youngest was born. Thank you for a lovely relaxing stay, just what we needed. We ate, drank and watched films around the cosy fire. We only live 5 minutes from here, but it felt like we were a whole world away.”
